Single Parent Statistics: Single Parenting at Its Highest

Article by Amie Haskett

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the number of single parents in America has reached 13.6 million as of 2010. These single parent statistics also show that such parents are raising 21.2 million children who are under the age of 21 years. About 60% are fathers and this number has rapidly increased in the last decade according to the statistics provided in an American website. Another study also shows that 1.4 million children are raised by grandparents alone. Moreover, employment statistics show that 79% of single mothers who have their children under their roofs are employed in good jobs.According to other single parent statistics, 50% of single mothers have full-time employment while 29% have part-time employment. Almost all single fathers who have their children under their wings have jobs and these, moreover, are good jobs. Some 74% of them have full-time employment while 18% work part-time. Based on these single present statistics, there are more single fathers than single mothers who have good-paying jobs. This could be the reason why there are more grants for single moms than grants for single dads. With these statistics on spouse-less people raising their children, it is important for such parents to know about effective strategies in raising children well. Aside from giving love, attention and discipline, there are other strategies parents should employ in order to make single parenting fruitful and even fun. The first one would be to join a support group of single parents that allows them to share stories and advice about raising their children. A support group would also be able to encourage members to perform better the responsibilities expected of them. It will also be able to provide information about opportunities for people like them.A single parent should also instill discipline and provide rules to be followed in the house, such as chores and curfews. Every member of the family should have a share in the household duties and the parent must make sure that such rules are enforced. As much as possible, the parent should not date someone new very soon after the separation or divorce, so that the children will not be negatively affected by this new development. Ideally, the parent should start dating when the children are already in college. There should also be a weekly family bonding. Breakfast and dinner must be shared together. They can also have a family night every week that may be spent having dinner out. During and after dinner, they can talk about each other’s daily experiences. It will help if both the parent and the children undergo counseling with a psychologist so that they can cope with the difficulties of being in a one-parent household.A single parent should also take time out alone in order become refreshed and rejuvenated. After a tiring day of working, studying and doing household chores, he or she can go out and have a quiet stroll in the park, get a good massage, or learn a new relaxing skill or hobby. The important thing is that the single parent avoids burnout and too much stress. Single parents work hard, so they must reward themselves with some quiet time alone.

Single Parents question by Dewey: What is a good hypothesis for a research study on the wellbeing of children w/single parents to married parent?
I want to compare the well being of children with single parents to married parents by examing childcare, the use of it, the availability of it, the need for it to increase income, etc.

One suggestion:

The availability and affordability of childcare tends to foster detachment from a child, no matter the marital status of the biological parents.
